Paint Finishes & Wall Stickers, Which Ones Work Best?

The type of finish on your walls DOES make a difference when you use wall stickers in your home decor plan. Here are some tips on how to choose and use paint and texture to get the best results with your favorite vinyl wall sticker from Wall Decor Plus More.

1 - PAINT FINISHES - If you are repainting a wall that you know will be home to a wonderful wall sticker, choose satin or glossy paint for good sticker adhesion. And enamel is even better because it is the least porous of the paint finishes. Flat finish is too porous for wall stickers to adhere to, and zero VOC paint doesn't work well either. 2 - TEXTURE VS SHINE - Shiny paint (satin, gloss, enamel) is a better choice, even if your wall has some texture, than flat paint even on a smooth wall without texture. Our special post about working with texture can be found Yes, Wall Stickers CAN Work on Textured Walls.









3 - DRYING VS CURING - Yes, there is a difference. Your paint may be dry to the touch but that doesn't mean it has cured (hardened all the way through). Curing can take several days or longer, (probably plan on at least 2 weeks) depending on your paint and on the dampness or coolness of the weather. The stronger the new paint smell, the longer it will need to cure before you can apply wall stickers. The smell likely comes from the compounds and gases in the paint, the very same ones that can break down the adhesive on the wall stickers so they won't stick well or will fall off after a short time.

4 - MOISTURE & WALL STICKERS - Don't panic, this doesn't mean wall stickers won't work in your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room. Because they will! It's ongoing moisture behind your sheetrock that may cause problems with your wall stickers. Some examples are: walls that back up to cooling systems, water pipes, overhead windows or windows that have been boarded up–these areas are prone to condensation, which may not be obvious when you apply your wall stickers. Yes, Wall Stickers CAN Work on Textured Walls

Not sure if vinyl wall stickers will work on your textured walls? We get that question fairly often. So we at Wall Decor Plus More decided to test our stickers on a wall with a "knockdown" texture. By testing our products on real wall surfaces, just like the ones in your home, we can better help you use our vinyl wall stickers effectively in your own home decor.

We are pleased to offer these tips and how-to's that will help you successfully use our vinyl wall stickers on your rough or textured walls:

1. It starts with choosing a wall sticker that has a bolder, plainer font. You can probably get by with some thinner script lettering if your wall texture isn't quite as rough as the one in our photos, but generally it's easier to apply the bold, plain fonts on a textured wall surface. Why? The thicker letters simply have more material to stick onto the wall, so they adhere better.

2. Next, be sure you allow plenty of time to work slowly and carefully. With patience you CAN get the vinyl wall sticker applied securely. It can be tricky to get the top tape layer off the lettering–on a rough wall surface, the stickers won't adhere perfectly and a little more effort will be needed. If a letter gets moved, you might need to place it by hand; again, plain lettering works better for this than fine, connected lettering.



3. Once the tape is removed, rub the wall sticker down firmly with your fingers. The photo above shows the slight curve in the "N" that happened after we rubbed it down really well. The sticker curved into a groove in the wall texture, which means it has adhered well. Can't really see it? No one else will either.

For our test we chose a wall quote that is approximately 23"W x 12"H. It's Chocolate Brown applied onto a tan textured wall.

Our photos on this post were taken two weeks after the vinyl wall sticker was applied to the "knockdown" textured wall surface. We waited two weeks to be sure that the sticker STAYED STUCK on the textured wall–and it did! We believe you'll have the same success with our vinyl wall stickers.

Clearing Up Confusion About Types of Wall Stickers

Sometimes customers contact us with questions using about their wall stickers. Let's clear up the confusion about types of stickers and quality.

There were problems with wall stickers that customers bought from competitors. After visiting with these customers, we knew the product they had was not ours, but we wanted to help. Some of the problems they had were:

• attempting to remove a sticker that was taking off the paint

• confused about how to apply the sticker, when it was printed on sticky plastic instead of being die-cut

Here are four important things to know:

1. Do read the application instructions before you purchase. This will tell you how well the item is made. If the manufacturer is sending you a film to apply to the sticker, be cautious – a reputable wall sticker manufacturer has already applied this transfer film to the wall sticker. If you have to add this yourself and don't have a lot of experience, you may get wrinkles, crooked lettering, etc., making a good wall sticker application almost impossible. We see this type of problem often on wall stickers from China and Hong Kong.

2. Make certain the material is designed for Home Décor use. Vinyl stickers for signage use existed a long time before Home Décor wall stickers became stylish. Those for signs need super strong adhesive to withstand outdoor elements–AND they need to be glossy to attract attention. Neither Glossy nor Strong Adhesive types are recommended for wall stickers for Home Décor use.

3. Matte finish is best for Home Décor use. It looks like it's painted right on your wall. The non-shiny look of a Matte finish wall sticker allows it to blend in with the painted surface. All high-quality wall stickers have this Matte finish.

4. Confirm that the item is a Die-cut Decal, not an image printed on sticky plastic. This is so important! A die-cut decal has no background permanently attached to it or surrounding it (ie. no sticky clear plastic stuff), just the die-cut lettering/design itself that will go on the wall. Some cheap wall decals are not actually decals–they are just a design printed on sticky plastic material. These don't adhere well to anything except smooth surfaces. Plus, the clear plastic looks tacky on your wall.

How to Remove Vinyl Wall Stickers and Decals

If you're considering using vinyl wall stickers and decals in your home decor, you're probably wondering about removing them when the time comes. Let us show you just how easy that process is. 

The photos show that no paint is coming off the wall or even stuck to the back of the wall sticker itself during removal. This is usually how simple it is. However, do be aware that there are a couple of factors that figure into the ease of removal of a vinyl wall sticker or decal.

The paint on your wall not only needs to dry, it needs time to "cure." What does this mean? Well, paint goes through a two-stage process: in the first stage, the paint "dries" when the solvents and thinners evaporate from the paint on the wall; in the second stage, the paint "cures" when it hardens into a solid film. This can take up to two weeks, sometimes longer if either the room or the weather is very humid. If a vinyl wall sticker is applied before the paint has fully cured, there may be some paint loss when you eventually remove that decal.

It can be helpful to use a hair blow dryer to remove wall stickers. The heat softens the sticker's adhesive, making it easier to peel off. CAUTION: heat from the hair blow dryer can be HOT on your fingers too, so be careful with this, especially if children are helping you.

The photo below shows the new border we applied in our entryway being removed, with the help of eager little hands. Be sure to read the caution below the photo, to limit which wall decals you want removed!

CAUTION: Only show children how to do this IF they are old enough to know which stickers you want removed and which ones should stay up!

Laundry Rooms Need Love Too!

Is your Laundry Room a sadly neglected space? Has it become a catch-all room that you try to avoid? Then it's time to give your Laundry Room the love it deserves! After all, it's where a lot of the "clean" happens in your family home–let's make it attractive and functional. You can tackle it as a Do it yourself project–it's fairly easy.

Let's begin. First, figure out how you want the room to function: is it also a mudroom? a second bathroom? a sewing space? Decide exactly how you want it to look and where you want things to go. 

The second step is cleaning. Remove everything that will no longer belong in there. Sweep and mop the floor, wipe down shelves, scrub cabinets and appliances in and out, and clean your sink. (Don't forget to check lint traps, lint can be a fire hazard.) Wash windows and curtains. Now you're ready for the fun part! 

Revamp with color! Choose a cheerful wall color that you find energizing. Paint can be a big part of your Laundry Room makeover. 

Now it's time to reorganize! Get rid of the supplies you no longer use. Have handy shelves, rolling carts or cabinets ready for storage. You'll also need a place to fold clothes: a counter top (a drop-down one if space is tight) or a rolling cart with a counter on it. You'll also need a sorting cart to separate colors and whites. Hooks or hanging bars and hangers can be used for drip-dry items and will save on ironing if you hang things up right out of the dryer. Use a fun patterned fabric to cover unsightly things like pipes under the sink. 

Laundry originates in other rooms–mostly bedrooms and kitchens. Try using a different colored hamper, clothes basket and hangers for each family member–it will make putting away clean laundry a lot faster and easier!
